Last year and the year before that, May Day was filled with lilacs. Typically I’d be spending the day cutting arm-loads of lilacs to deliver to friends and neighbors. But this year, this year my lilacs are about 10 days from opening. It’s been a long winter, much longer than the 6 extra weeks promised by a certain groundhog. So, we wait for lilacs.
Only now is Spring waking from a deep sleep. She’s still stretching and yawning and blinking back the heaviness of winter. Spring is a sleepy-head. Spring could use an alarm clock. She has over-slept and doesn’t much seem to care. So, slowly, ever so slowly—she tentatively puts a toe out of bed. We can only hope she braves the icy floors beneath her and makes it into the kitchen for a cup of coffee.
Amen.
Every morning I stand at the bottom of my trees- just barely beginning to bud- and I say “C’mon, Spring- you can do it! C’mon, Spring! C’mon! Please? ”

It’s AMAZING… I’ll be in Nashville in 12 days and I suspect that might be my first real taste of Spring. It just doesn’t feel like it’s coming to the coast this year. ~W
What a beautiful flower patch!
Maddie and Betsy delivered hand-woven construction paper baskets brimming with wild flowers to our dear, old neighbors this morning. We did not participate in any Seattle May Day protests. Maybe next year…or not. Miss you! xoxo

This is one of my favorite plantings in town. It gets better and better each year. I adore purple tulips too and IZ got me bunches and bunches for May Day. 😀 ~W

The photos didn’t do this justice—it really is a lovely corner. I aspire to having a corner like that. 😀 ~W
I am going to find that corner tomorrow darnit just to get myself in the mood….You made my May Day! (and even inspired me to weed my own flower beds) I wonder who maintains that corner?

You know, there was a sign in the midst of all those tulips. I don’t recall exactly, but it says who maintains the corner. I’m drawing a blank. Hmm… 😀 ~W
Oh those flowers are stunning. Our lilacs have just passed here. They are my favorite and it makes me sad that their “season” is so brief. But for a few days, our road smelled heavenly, thanks to a huge lilac tree down the way.

They are some of my favorites. Every year, I mean to post about my stint in stealing lilacs. But I never do. I should do that, eh? ~W

Oh dear!
It is a very old tradition that has, sadly, fallen out of fashion. But, nothing says we can’t revive it! 😀 ~W
