Boy Wonder gave his father a card yesterday that read: Happy Father’s Day to the dad who wrote the book on fatherhood. . . from the kid who inspired the chapter, “Just When You Think You Have It All Figured Out. . .” Inside he inscribed the card:
Dear Dad,
Thank you for being such a good father this year. It amazes me that you can clean, cook, play, and take on the evil wrath of mom all at the same time.

Sure it was kid, sure it was!
Dad’s are a great thing. My sister had her baby in march, and my brother in law was beaming. When you have a kid looking up at you it’s an entirely different story about how you make decisions, and how you try to appear to the world.
In my town, we have a high crime rate, and I’m one of the few that had a role model to look up to. Count your blessings that your family is as close as it is, and that you have a level headed young adult instead of a child that makes stupid choices.

Wrath can be a good thing. My husband and I enjoy playing good cop/bad cop with each of us taking turns on certain things.

Are you sure? He doesn’t even look legal. No-I mean SEVENTEEN! I’m impressed with that because, at the ripe old ago of 56, I haven’t made it 17 years yet. ( I would have but, you know it takes two and now it’s just as well, because I get another chance in a better marriage.) Seventeen years is moving into that space where you really do say this IS for better and worse. And that you have the maturity to realize that so much of it is about the vision that you choose and the evolution and the process rather than a feeling at one point in time- well, it is a lovely post. I think it’s wonderful that you feel the romance of that evolution. And the photo is absolutely delightful in every way.

I remember 5 years feeling like a big deal, and then 10, and then 15. At this point, I only think about years in terms of the big day—the rest of the time, this is our life. Not measured in years but in moments. The moments are too numerous to count. ~W

The glasses: IZ got a new pair of glasses because his wireframed pair, that he’d had for 6 years, snapped a few weeks ago. Well, when he came home with his new pair, which are plastic framed, our son quipped, “Uh, are those a permanent choice?” When pressed about what he could mean, he said, “It’s just that you look like a picture that someone took a marker to and drew glasses on your face.” Our child has NO tact. ~W
Jeez, he makes me want to have a kid of my own. Tell Boy Wonder to cut it out.

I think this is the curse of being an only child—they tend to sound older than they are. But, he’s 10.5 and working on his humor. He’s even laughing at himself. HUGE improvement on that front. ~W

Thank you! On that trip we both saw a young man in his 20’s that looked somewhat like BW now. I looked at BW and said, “hey, when you grow up, I think you might look a little like him.” And he replied, “yeah, I think you’re right!”. It was kinda weird seeing into the future like that! ~W
