I did a similar amount of research - without the Star Wars stuff (well written, though!) - and came to the conclusion that the Baby Locks are best for me, because of the support from my local dealer who does classes and stuff too. I will be buying the 6-needle soon and starting my own business. thanks for writing! I enjoyed it, and passed it on to my DH, who appreciated the references.

Be Well.

Loved the article - such a helpful post. But as for the Singer XL6000: This upper end machine is hailed as totally awesome by so many owners online. I can't tell you how many inquiries on this machine I've seen on various sewing message boards and not one dismal or negative reference in responses.
Other Singers, YES, lots of negativity, but I'd be inclined to think that they got that one upper end model right.
So sad about Elna. I have a 6004 sewing machine that I just love, and was considering them for a while, but I'm glad I got the Brother Innovis 1200.

so refreshing to find someone else who considers the costs v quality issues-- my present qualms relate to the length (in years) of support (parts, software compatibility) now given to new machines. I believe it's now like 10 yrs, whereas previously it was something like 25 yrs. Being forced to discard the old and buy new doesnt bear thinking about. I dread my 7570 pfaff ever seriously sickening, for fear its electronics or embroidery arm wont be replaceable, likewise my old 1471. I dont use expensive software; use Embird, Thred and the old pfaff PCD (also no longer supported). Do hope the earlier end of support issues aren't as bad as we hear! E in Oz

Having just started to look - not for something as exalted as an embroiderer, just for a domestic sewing machine. As I read your article I just kept repeating lots of: Tell it - brother.
These dealers are something. One tells me 6 weeks to repair a 30 year old Singer 774, another 'she says that to everyone just to sell you a new machine'. There are no posted list prices.
Thanks so much for the Brother = Baby lock list.
I'm not thinking that I'll find a used NX-200 series but I sure will be looking on E-bay for prices and be firm that I'm not going to pay more than 60% of list. Then we'll see.
Boy, buying computer parts sure is more competitive than sewing machines.
Thanks for your willingness to share your work.
Sincerely
Rob Irwin

Yeah - I'm afraid G is 100% digital. Use a hoop for embroidery? Where's the fun in that? By the way - I have ABSOLUTE respect for people who manage to do stuff by hand... but since G needed a new machine - we figured out a way to get an embroidery machine for less than what he would have paid for a new regular machine... so he gets to have his cake and eat it too.

Good grief! This is why I do the age old art of embroidery the age old way...with a hoop. They're a lot cheaper and easier to work! I can't believe how much research you did...I am mightily impressed indeed. I can't wait to see all the goodies that you crank out of this beauty!!

Well, technically (despite all the help from his indulging parents) this is G's machine. He will be using it, not me. He really needed a new machine, his is kaput. He has NO idea his dad splurged and bought him the software too. So, oh... boy. And, let's everybody say, "THANK YOU, IRS" for the refund. Heh. ~W

Thank you. And yes, the boy saved up his money for a year and we helped him get a used machine that will do embroidery work. He's very excited. Rumor has it, Wednesday is delivery day. :D ~W

Ok...did you *see* the obnoxious quilt square I ended up pasting together??? You think I'm ready to read THIS kind of post??? Please, I'm just a craft baby, and all this talk scares me just a little. :)

And, forgiving the hyperbole regarding your imminent expiration, I do hope you're doing better! ;)

oh. my. word.
That is maybe the funniest and most perfect thing I've read in a long time. Thanks for putting in the research time.

May the [meta]phors be with you.
