Thank you for all the interesting research. I am looking at a Bernina 220 which is only $699. After reading your research, I am wondering if it is made by someone other than Bernina. Do you know?

A million thanks, I've been obsessing over buying an expensive machine for 4 years and so frustrated at the lack of information out there. You've answered so many questions (and many I'd never known to ask). Giving me the ammo to take to my Viking dealer is such a help. I have a used Viking I purchased on ebay in 2004 & it was a lucky break I knew to bid on it because it's a great machine, however it made me want more (it only has a few decorative stitches & no embroidery).

My hubby would rather eat glass than plow through this stuff. He appreciates your attention as it'll save some $$$ and peace!!! THANKS!!!

Thanks for the detailed info. I spent all day looking at machines and came home totally confused. Now, are you still happy with the Viking Platinum?

Thank you so much for your tireless digging--deciphering the market has starting taking the fun out of the prospect of sewing! I really appreciate your help.

I work for a Brother/Singer/Viking dealer and I was just researching the convoluted heritage of Viking and the new VSM/SVP groups. This article was INCREDIBLY insightful, I gained more information in 15 minutes than I did in the hours I spent reading about them on the company/wikipedia/etc websites.
I feel like I have a much better understanding of the machines we sell (and don't sell) - and I plan on using that information to help customers that come in to my store. Yes, help. I try to be one of the "good guys" when I can help it.
As I am in the market for a new sewing machine (and serger!) this was also helpful to me personally.

Thank you!

Thank you I learned on a pfaff and was curious about which was better between pfaff and bernina. Your research was very informative and it help recall to mind some things that were explained to me by one of the Pfaff dealers in the Chicagoland area. Although I will look at viking to see what it has and compare it to the Pfaff that I love. However, I do have a friend that is a Bernina die hard so our compromise is I buy the pfaff and he buys the bernina and we will have the best of both worlds.

thank you

I liked the article, it had all the information I was looking for. I wish I had found it last week. I just bought a used Pfaff sewing and embroidery machine off Ebay with lots of accessories (haven't gotten it yet) I hope I didn't make a mistake. At least I did narrow it the choices down to Pfaff and Viking. I decided to go with the Pfaff because I plan on quilting and sewing thick items so I will use the IDT. I also want to embroider. Hope you are enjoying your machine.

Thank You IZ! I've been trying to negotiate the minefield of sewing machine brands with little luck. This was a big help! (and confirmed what I was starting to suspect) Thanks again.

Wow! I am really impressed with the research. Do you mind if I print it out and save for the future? In the meantime, I found myself holding my breath to see what the final recommendation was...and so happy that I actually own a Viking. It's almost 30 years old but still a wonderful machine.

<em>Welcome! My mom sewed on a Viking for years and loved it. I knew what I wanted, generally, but was worried that the brand had changed after all these years. So, I was relieved as well to find out that I'm getting my "dream" machine. :D I'm sure IZ doesn't mind if you print this stuff out! ~W</em>
