Pentecost 2006
Sunday is Pentecost–and I’ve been busy! On Monday night I facilitated a Community Art Experience where the congregation had a chance to make kites for this Sunday. Our theme this year is, Let Your Spirit Soar. 50 kites later, my spirit is pooped! 
Anyhow–here are a few early pictures of the sanctuary I snapped this afternoon. Much love and gratitude to the adorable IZ and Boy Wonder for helping my brainstorm become reality.

lovely kites! do you have a hidden fan in the back of the room to make them blow in the wind? that would be fun.
yet again i forgot that tomorrow is pentecost. i did remember, though, that it will be the first sunday of the month so i have to put the button back on my robe and take it with me. details…

Carrie, they are prayer flags in a way, considering how they were created.
Neither does this congregation I serve. Oh the stories I wish I could tell. Heh.
Margaret: You have no idea.
Kat: I thought of that! But, I have lots of elderly people who, quite legitimately, complain of drafts and cold. However, I rigged these babies on fishing lures, so they should spin with any movement. As I’m liturgist tomorrow, I should provide the requisite hot air to make everybody dizzy. (and I may secretly prop open a door…)

Thanks, Karan. I’ve been getting lots of good feedback–which is NICE. Apparently, this was a big hit at church. The intern does good–for once.

so nobody complained about a draft or too much eye-stimulation or bumping their heads or anything? cool. did i tell you i did a lenten wreath where we put out a candle each week? nobody complained about that, either. rock on, us.

kites are so much cooler than anything the church i was at this Sunday did. I’m jealous. Of course, I wasn’t there to help them plan for it.

Well, what Wende doesn’t tell you and what was *really* cool about it all was how well coordinated everything was. It started with announcing the “art event” three weeks in advance with cool color flyers inserted into the church bulletins. Then the community art event itself which was part meditation part desert pot-luck (YUM⁄!) and then the following Sunday service itself which tied everything together from litany to the message. Our Reverand even managed to get the lyrics of “Let’s go Fly a Kite” into the message demonstrating the concept of our lives being caught up by the Holy Spirit. Was very cool indeed and perfect for Pentecost. If only every Sunday was that well planned & executed…
